How long will my family law case take?

The length of a case depends upon the method used: mediation, collaboration or litigation. A case moves as quickly as the parties are willing to cooperate, exchange information and documentation, and negotiate a fair resolution. The length of a case depends upon the issues, the personalities of the parties and the professionals, and the ability of all to work together.

In litigation, in the event your case goes all the way to trial, cases can take anywhere from 9 months to 2 years when there are complicated parenting issues, or complex financial matters. Simple uncontested cases can be completed in less than a few months. Sometimes, cases last longer than 2 years. However, less than 1% of cases proceed to trial.

The longer a case, the more costly it becomes for the parties and the family. The goal of Alexander Law is to choose the best path for you and your family considering your expectations, needs, and financial concerns. We will regularly update you on the progress of your case, and what you can expect with timing going forward.
